Dried Fruit Filled Apple Dumplings with Vegan Caramel Sauce

These apple dumplings are a simple yet very tasty dessert or treat. They are best fresh from the oven or served warm.

Dried Fruit Filled Apple Dumplings with Vegan Caramel Sauce

Serving Size: 4

Ingredients:

  • 4 apples
  • 9 frozen puff pastry squares, thawed (2 per apple plus one for decorations)
  • 1/2 cup dried fruit mix – raisins, dried cherries, dried cranberries, goji berries or others
  • 1 tablespoons sugar
  • pinch cinnamon

for the vegan caramel sauce:

  • 4 tablespoons vegan margarine
  • 1/2 cup brown
  • 1 cup vanilla soy milk
  • 1 tablespoon corn starch
  • pinch salt

Dried Fruit Filled Apple Dumplings with Vegan Caramel Sauce

Directions:

  1. Thaw the puff pastry squares.
  2. Preheat the oven to the indicated temperature on the package of puff pastry.
  3. Mix the dried fruit with the tablespoon sugar and pinch of cinnamon.
  4. If using organic apples, you can leave the skin on, or if you prefer not to eat the skin, then peel the apple and remove the core.
  5. Set each of the apples on 1 square of puff pastry.
  6. Fill the cored area of the apple with the dried fruit mixture.
  7. Place the 2nd square of puff pastry over the top of the apple.
  8. Gently press the 2 squares of puff pastry together to completely seal the apple inside the pastry.
  9. Using a cookie cutter of choice, cut out small decorations for the dumplings.
  10. Moisten the under side of each decoration with water and place on top of the dumpling.
  11. Bake in the oven for 18-25 minutes or until the pastry is lightly golden brown.
  12. While the apples are baking, make the caramel sauce.
  13. Heat the vegan margarine in a small saucepan.
  14. Add the brown sugar, mix well and melt.
  15. Mix the corn starch in the vanilla soy milk and add to the brown sugar.
  16. Add the pinch of salt, and stir until the mixture has thickened.
  17. Remove from the heat and allow to cool.
  18. When the apples are golden brown, remove from the oven.
  19. Allow the apples to cool for a few minutes as they are very hot inside.
  20. Serve each apple with caramel sauce drizzled on top.

    Hi JoLynn, Thank you for your nice comment :-) These were really yummy. i will e doing this much more often, especially over the holidays- have the ingredients on had so thy can be quickly :whipped up”. The leaf was just a little added touch. Without it, the apples don’t look so pretty- just a big round ball wrapped in pastry- so the leaf helped to decorate it. They can be served plain, just dusted with powdered sugar, and individuals can drizzle the caramel sauce on as they want. The caramel sauce really tastes great with the apple. I hope you enjoy them as much as we did

    Thank you for your comment. It’s a lovely treat to enjoy. Our neighbor has a lot of old apple trees, and one in particular is a favorite of mine. It’s called a winter apple. You pick it from the tree in October, it’s still green, but then it ripen when stored properly and you can enjoy it from December through March. The variety is called Ontario, found most often in Germany…I don’t know about elsewhere in Europe. No matter what apple you use, I hope you give this easy treat a try and enjoy it.

    Thank you for your comment. Actually they are very easy to make, especially when you use the store bought puff pastry (vegan of course). It was very yummy, and nice that it was not so heavy. Even vegan holiday meals are mega filling and so a lighter dessert could be nice. I did not peel the apples because they were from our tree – I knew they were organic. Bu some might prefer to have the apples peeled which is just an additional step….up to you. I hope you enjoy them.
