I’m intrigued! they’re truly beautiful. I’m surprised there’s no salt at all though…
Thanks for trying out this recipe….and I’m so glad you enjoyed them!!!
Hi Nora,
Thank you for your comment- these were amazing…and very tasty. They tasted really nice without the salt…but if you want a pinch or so .do so…
The flavor of the garam masala with the soy yogurt and red cabbage becomes slightly sweet…and spicy… we really enjoyed them, and of course the color was amazing…fun to eat.
Hi VegWiz…
Thank you for your comment, we thought they were delicious. What an unusual sandwich. I couldn’t resist giving them a try…the colors were so amazing, and we enjoy and grow red cabbage. We are vegan..so..the milk curd isn’t an option, and I adapted the mustard seed to garam masala. I’m sure the flavors were close to your original and we really thought they were tasty. It’s a great way to use red cabbage. Often 1 head is too much for sauteed red cabbage, and a 2nd meal, so what to do with the rest…these were really good, so we are happy to have found them.
Thanks for sharing your post and it was fun to veganize them for the vegan populace…which I am happy is growing
Hey there, these look amazing! I’ve been following Vegalicious for a while now and tried out many of the recipes, great stuff.
I was wondering how do you shred the cabbage? I use a handheld grater, which is great with carrots but tricky with cabbage. Any tips would be quite welcome!
Hi Noora,
Thanks for your question…well, until now, it has been a nightmare. I have always used a sharp knife like a bread knife and was never really satisfied. But, last week, I came across this super vegetable peeler. It looks like a regular vegetable peeler, but it is mega mega sharp and works fantastically. It’s really easy to use and shreds the cabbage really finely. It’s called a “Turbo-peeler” made in Denmark.I don’t know i you can et it or not…It was not expensive 5,00 euro in Europe, would be about $3.00 or so. All I could suggest just keep looking at stores until you find a really really sharp one…and of course be really careful using it.
Hi Chris
Yes….the color is brilliant! I’m big on colorful food these days, using beetroot and red cabbage. I made a red cabbage soup recently….another great way to use it up!
I think your vegan adaptation is great…..I am sure they tasted just as good!
I just made these, but I added half a shredded apple, 1/4 tsp of cinnamon and drizzled some honey onto the sandwich as well. I was surprised – absolutely delish. Though I wish I could’ve had my cabbage shredded as finely as yours!
Hi Calanha,
Thanks for your comment- and what a great idea to add the shredded apple – yum. I have struggled fr many years cutting cabbage as finely as possible with a sap knife.I was really happy recently to ind this special vegetable slicer.it looks like a peeper.but s very sharp..perhaps you can find one that will work.I was not expensive- good luck- I’m glad you liked the sandwiches, we were surprised how taste they were and we look forward to having them more during the year.
these look … freaky!!
i’m pretty scared to make those
still want to try though!
Oh Zob, don’t be afraid..they’re really tasty. I do like Calantha’s idea of grating some apple and adding that to it as well..yum
I do hope you give them a try.
ooohhhh……I love the idea of apples n cinnamon…..thanks Calantha!
Hi Veggie Wiz…
yes..I agree the apples and cinnamon will taste yummy can’t wait for the weekend when my family and I can enjoy it
.
Isn’t it fun to put a nice recipe out and see how other folks adapt and enjoy it…fun
I made these and they turned out extremely bitter. Apparently, if Garam Masala is cooked for any amount of time, it will turn extremely bitter. I had to throw all of the cabbage away.
Oh Arw,
I am so sorry about your bitter experience. I have never heard about that with garam masala- and we didn’t have any problem- but I am so sorry to hear about your problem. I really have no idea why it happened like that. I have used garam masala often in other recipes..and even cooked it for a rather long time- 20 minutes or so with a cauliflower and potato curry. I do deeply apologize for your bitter experience and that you had to toss the cabbage out.
Hi Arw,
It is wierd that your sandwiches turned bitter! We use garam masala in most indian dishes…..and they’re all cooked for quite a while with it…..this never happens! Maybe one of your ingredients had gone bad? the cabbage or yogurt or the masala itself? Maybe you should try making them again…..using cumin powder instead of garam masala??
Hi VeggieWiz,
Thanks for your further comment on this, I appreciate it. I found it quite unusual that the sandwich was bitter, and felt badly that she had that experience. I agree with you that something…must have gone bad- I don’t know what though, and as I really hate to waste food, I didn’t suggest that she try it again, although, it is such a yummy sandwich, if she really wanted to enjoy it- it is worth trying again.
