Traditional brownies recipes usually use eggs and butter, but there is no reason to use animal products at all. Vegan brownies are delicious and easy to make.

In the course of working on a baking and pastry certificate from Santa Rosa JC, I was hoping to learn about the possibilities of starting a vegan bakery. I know there are some successful ones out there, but very few vegan alternatives here in the SF Bay area. The teacher just didn’t think it would fly. I’d love to hook up with some folks on a wholistic vegan lifestyle where we could live -and work- as vegans. Currently I pay the rent by serving all kinds of horrid samples at Costco! Any suggestions? These brownies are a great inspiration!

My wife is vegetarian and has some definite lactose issues to boot, so I’m always looking for recipes like this. However, as I get more and more familiar with the vegetarian world, I get more and more confused with the wide array of tofus. Which kind of tofu did you use for this recipe?

I used silken tofu, and baked this in an 8″ x 8″ pan. It took about 30 minutes.

Also, I don’t have a food processor, but a hand blender worked fine for this.

Is there any alternative to tofu? As crazy as it sounds, I’m allergic to soy, which is mostly what tofu consists of.

    Hi Sarah,
Yes…I googled for brownies without tofu and saw that at the PPK website, they have one. I have not made or tried it…but they are really good vegan cooks so I am sure the recipe can be trusted to be a good one.

I did find a tofu-free brownie recipe, but I haven’t tried it yet (although they do look scrumptious):

Hi Janet, Thanks for writing back. I’m glad you found a recipe that you like, and yes, I agree the photo looks very yummy.
I can’t get xanthan gum here…so that would make it difficult, and it is an important ingredient…don’t forget to use it. I hope you make them and enjoy :-) I’m looking forward to hearing about them.

I’ve tried making the brownies Chris mentioned on the PPK website and I can vouch for their goodness, they’re really delicious! I haven’t tried the tofu-based recipe mentioned here but I am worried about eating soy too much because it is sometimes treated with hexane during processing so alternatives to soy-based products are worth giving a whirl.

I guess you could use a commercial egg replacer instead of tofu but sometimes using apple sauce in baking can work well as an egg substitute. Anyway, thought I’d put it out there in case someone else doesn’t want to use eggs or tofu, I might give it a try with this recipe and report back. :)
